WWRP/THORPEX WORKSHOP on 4D-VAR and
ENSEMBLE KALMAN FILTER INTER-COMPARISONS

BUENOS AIRES - ARGENTINA, 10-13 NOVEMBER 2008

SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT- March 14, 2008

Following the first announcement of this workshop (May 2007), we invite abstracts of papers as well as contributions to the specific session discussions described below. Registration to the workshop and submission of poster abstracts is now open and can be done using our registration and poster facilities on our web site at http://4dvarenkf.cima.fcen.uba.ar/. There is a US$100 registration fee payable on site.

After wide consultations with the community, the organizing committee prepared a program with introductory invited talks by experts in 4D-Var and EnKF on the topics considered to be most important for the intercomparison of these methods. In this program, posted in our website, there is one introductory review session, and 7 additional sessions devoted to the problems of balance, nonlinearity, model errors, localization, computational issues, validation, and synergies between the two methods.

Each session except the first, starts with a poster session, invited talks, and ends with an extensive discussion session, all related to the subject of the session.
We welcome contributions to the specific subjects discussed in sessions 2 to 8. In order to allow the chairs to structure the discussion session, contributions to the discussions can include up to 3 slides for each session. They should be sent to the organizers 4 weeks before the workshop via electronic mail, and will be posted on the web prior to the workshop, as will “discussion points” prepared by each session chair. Technical guidelines related to the format of the posters will be also posted on our web site.

The workshop will be preceded by an intensive two weeks course on data assimilation for students and researchers. Non-local Latin American participants may apply for support at http://4dvarenkf.cima.fcen.uba.ar/course/. Workshop participants interested in lecturing during the week of 3-7 November 2008 are warmly invited to contact Celeste Saulo and Eugenia Kalnay.

INITIAL ANNOUNCEMENT- May 2007
